In gymnastic parlance, rolling up describes a forward half-circle that starts from the standing position. To roll up, you bend and put both hands down and pike or tuck as you bring both upper hands. Unlike a forward roll with a handstand where your legs are together and continue over the top, you roll up to a handstand at an edge making use of a scissor kick. A swimming pool or a watercraft dock is the safest place to learn how you can roll up to a handstand at an edge.

Step 1

Bend forward at the waist and place both hands at the edge, shoulder width apart. Extend both legs directly back sufficient to elevate the middle of your back in a gentle curve.

Step 2

Bring one foot forward till that knee is bent in line with the middle of your upper body. At this point, your arms are straight and your weight is on both hands and the toes of your feet.

Step 3

Push off with your back foot and keep that leg directly as you bring it to the vertical. Immediately push off with your various other foot, align that knee and use this leg as counter-balance to stop the forward momentum of your body.

Step 4

Continue holding the handstand and slowly raise your counter-balance leg up until both legs are together in the vertical position.
